Parents Asking The Question, How Can I Protect My Kids From Predators At The Local Park
Many parents ask the question, how can I protect my kids from predators at the local park. It is a very valid question, letting kids out to play can be scary. The world is not a safe place and that is truly sad. Parents cannot lock their children up to keep them safe, that is not a good way to live, however, they also cannot just let them wander around and hope for the best. Parents must work with their kids to ensure that they understand how to react when approached by a strange.
Ideas for teaching kids to keep themselves safe from predators.
. Teach children to stay away from strangers. Of course all parents know this one, but did you know you may have to teach your child who a stranger is. A kind old lady is a stranger, a man dressed up in a Santa suit is a stranger, the person that says Mommy and Daddy want me to bring you home is a stranger.
. Role play. Pretend to be a young man looking for his lost puppy. Pretend to be a friend of Mommy’s who was sent to take you home because Mommy is sick.
. Teach you child to yell, to kick and to make a big scene. We spend a lot of time teaching kids manners, but we need to teach them to cause a scene when it is necessary as well. Let your child know that it is OK to yell and kick if a stranger is trying to take them or get them to come with him or her.
.Teach your child who to look for if he or she is lost and needs help. A Police officer, a school crossing guard, or mother with children. While still strangers, these types of people are likely to help and are better to approach then some others.
