How Can My Community Go Green

With deepening concerns about the amount of natural resources being used by today’s generation, many families are choosing to go green. If you have a goal of green living, you might ask, “how can my community go green?” Here are a few tips.

While it may not be possible for every home in the community to install their own generating system, they can support their power company’s efforts at greener power. You may be able to choose to buy power that is generated through renewable sources. While your energy bill might be slightly higher, you can feel good about doing your part.

Encourage residents to reduce the amount of energy they are currently using. Replace incandescent lights with lower energy florescent light bulbs. They not only reduce the energy consumed but last many times longer. If replacing light fixtures, consider LED lamps. These consume the least amount of energy and the bulbs can last 20 years or more. Set thermostats to use the minimal amount of energy to keep you comfortable. In the summer use fans to move air conditioned air. In the winter, wear a sweater or light jacket in the home.

Homeowners may want to consider adding an extra layer of insulation in the home. In many homes, an additional two to four inches of insulation are needed to bring the R-value to that recommended by current code. New insulation can be blown on top of the existing materials.

As each family in the community lowers power consumption they do their part to lower their carbon footprint. While the efforts of one person can be helpful, when everyone in a community takes part, those efforts are multiplied. For the greatest effect look for other ways to recycle, reduce and reuse and to encourage others to do their part as well.
