Parents Asking The Question, How Can I Protect My Kids From Predators At The Local Park

Many parents ask the question, how can I protect my kids from predators at the local park. It is a very valid question, letting kids out to play can be scary. The world is not a safe place and that is truly sad. Parents cannot lock their children up to keep them safe, that is not a good way to live, however, they also cannot just let them wander around and hope for the best. Parents must work with their kids to ensure that they understand how to react when approached by a strange.

Ideas for teaching kids to keep themselves safe from predators.

. Teach children to stay away from strangers. Of course all parents know this one, but did you know you may have to teach your child who a stranger is. A kind old lady is a stranger, a man dressed up in a Santa suit is a stranger, the person that says Mommy and Daddy want me to bring you home is a stranger.

. Role play. Pretend to be a young man looking for his lost puppy. Pretend to be a friend of Mommy’s who was sent to take you home because Mommy is sick.

. Teach you child to yell, to kick and to make a big scene. We spend a lot of time teaching kids manners, but we need to teach them to cause a scene when it is necessary as well. Let your child know that it is OK to yell and kick if a stranger is trying to take them or get them to come with him or her.

.Teach your child who to look for if he or she is lost and needs help. A Police officer, a school crossing guard, or mother with children. While still strangers, these types of people are likely to help and are better to approach then some others.

Is A Homeowners Association A Good Thing?

If you are just about to buy or rent an apartment or townhouse, you may be asking yourself do home owners associations really benefit my home? In general, belonging to a home owners association does benefit you, and when it comes to selling your home, it can also be a big plus. However, belonging is not optional, if your home has a homeowners association, you are required to pay the monthly dues and join.

Homeowners associations are usually administered by a third party and membership typically includes such things as outside maintenance, trash collection and water and sewer charges. Your homeowners dues may also cover utilities, such as electricity and gas, and amenities such as use of a swimming pool, tennis courts and health club membership. In general, the more expensive your home, the higher the dues, although this is not always the case and the amounts can vary widely. One way to determine do homeowners associations really benefit my home, is to figure out how much these things would cost if paid for  separately.

The advantages of membership are obvious: it means that basic needs, such as trash and maintenance are taken care of, without you having to worry about them. Any potentially costly damage, such as a cracked pavement, repainting, a new roof, or severe storm damage becomes the responsibility of the association. Many homeowners associations strive to keep residents up to date, either with a website, regular newsletters or residents’ meetings.

One downside of belonging to a homeowners association, is that they can often be strict when it comes to allowing you to decorate the outside of your home, or do any landscaping. Some associations frown on having satellite dishes installed on your roof, or in your yard; some even like to have all outdoor features a uniform color. If you want to do anything different, you generally have to get their permission, which can be tedious and time consuming.

In general, belonging to a homeowners assocaition is a good thing. However, you should carefully consider what services are included, how strict they are, and of course the monthly and yearly cost.

Simple Tips On How To Start A Neigborhood Watch Scheme In Your Area

If you are wondering how to start a neighborhood watch scheme, the good news is that it is probably a lot easier than you think. The majority of people care about where they live, and want to make their neighborhood safe and secure for everyone who lives there. People want their kids to be able to play safely outside, they want to feel secure in their own homes, and also want to be feel that their neighbors would report any suspicious activity.

Starting a scheme is something a lot of people think about doing, but few actually get as far as doing it. The good news in this is that many of your neighbors would be very receptive to the idea, they just either do not know how to go about it themselves, or do not have the time to start organizing a scheme. A good starting point would be to put a note through the doors in your road, and some immediate surrounding roads, asking if anyone would be interested in forming a group. You can either give a phone number or email address for people to respond to, or set a time and date for an initial meeting and ask people to turn up.

Once you have the initial interest you need to identify the group’s priorities and get the group to agree to these. For example are the main problems in your area to do with anti-social behavior, traffic problems, or something else. Once you have identified areas you want to look at you need to identify measures of success. These are necessary in order to be able to show how well the group is working. Regular communication within a neighborhood watch scheme is also important to keep the group focused and engaged. Getting a group off the ground is fairly easy, success comes from keeping the group motivated.
